Requirements for an Assessor
To assess GQA's qualifications, the Assessor must hold a recognised Assessment Award such as A!, A2 or the old D32 or D33. (Holders of the "old" Awards must have completed the GQA form to show understanding of and compliance with the A and V standards).
They must be occupationally competent for the qualification they are assessing. If they meet these criteria, they can be issued with a GQA license for an approved Centre. The licenses are renewable and run for a 12-month period.
Licensed to a Centre
This means that the Assessor can asses for the approved centre that he/she is licensed for. To assess for another approved centre, an additional license is required. This is to take into account the differences that may exist between centre's and how they operate. It is normal for an assessor or IV to begin with a Provisional license at a new centre.

.
A lot of the more experienced assessors will hold the D Awards in assessment such as D32 or D33. This is perfectly acceptable, provided that:
- They keep themselves up to date with the new requirements
- They follow the principles of the A Awards.
- They fill in the appropriate form with their Centre Coordinator: D32 - D33

Personal Development
To signify that the assessor is keeping up to date and practicing continuous improvement, the Centre needs to maintain a Personal Development File made available for verification. It's important that you keep this file up to date, include details of any relevant training you have taken or assessment team meetings you attend. If you hold the D Units as your Assessor Award see the section on Working to the A Standards to the right.
